Ostia Antica Archaeological Park: Entry Ticket

Skip the crowds of the Colosseum and step into an entire Roman city frozen in time. Ostia Antica was once Rome's bustling port, and today it's one of the best-preserved ancient sites in the world — arguably rivaling Pompeii, with a fraction of the visitors.

Founded in the 4th century BC at the mouth of the Tiber, Ostia grew into a thriving harbor town of merchants, sailors and dockworkers who kept Rome fed and supplied for over a thousand years. As the river silted up and the port lost its purpose, the city was slowly abandoned, buried under centuries of earth — which is exactly why so much of it survives today.

Wander the same paved streets Roman citizens once walked, past multi-story apartment blocks, bustling taverns and public baths still decorated with their original black-and-white mosaics. Sit in the ancient theater, built to hold thousands, and picture it filled with roaring audiences. Peek into the Thermopolium, a 2,000-year-old fast-food counter, complete with a painted menu on the wall.

Explore the Forum, temples dedicated to Rome's gods, and the Capitolium that once towered over the city center. Look for the House of Diana, one of the best examples of Roman residential architecture anywhere, or the Baths of Neptune with their striking mosaic of the sea god's chariot.

Unlike more famous ruins, Ostia Antica lets you explore at your own pace, often with a whole street or building entirely to yourself. It's a rare chance to walk through everyday Roman life — not just its monuments — just a short trip from the heart of Rome.
