Housed within the Basilica of San Lorenzo, the Medici Chapels rank among Florence’s grandest funerary monuments and are an essential stop for anyone exploring the Renaissance. Here you’ll find three remarkable sculptures by Michelangelo alongside the resting places of 49 members of the Medici dynasty. Bypass the queues and head straight into this extraordinary site.
Built between the 16th and 17th centuries, the two chapels were designed by Michelangelo for the Medici, the great Renaissance patrons who went on to become Grand Dukes of Tuscany, and they continue to attract art enthusiasts from every corner of the globe.
Among the works on display is a statue of Anna Maria Luisa de’ Medici, the last of the family line. She bequeathed the Medici’s art treasures to the city of Florence, with a single condition: that they remain accessible to the public for all time.
A standout is the New Sacristy, Michelangelo’s debut as an architect, which already reveals concepts he would later develop for St. Peter’s Basilica. The tombs are adorned with three sculptural groups: Dawn and Dusk, Night and Day, and the unfinished Madonna and Child.
Your ticket also comes with a digital audio guide to help you discover the rest of Florence.
